The Southwestern Oklahoma State University Jazz Orchestra was organized by Dr. Richard Coy in the early 1950s. The group, which was called the Collegians, and was a favorite group on the Southwestern campus during this time. Since then, the group has been directed by Harlon Lamkin (1967-1970), Dr. Terry Segress (1970-2006), Dr. Keith M. Talley (2006-2012) and Dr. Richard Tirk since 2012.
The SWOSU Jazz Orchestra has performed many jazz festival concerts with outstanding jazz musicians such as The Clayton Brothers Quintet, Bobby Watson, Bill Watrous, Carl Fontana, Lou Marini Jr., Frank Mantooth, Kevin Mahogany, Kim Park, Dan Haerle, Fred Forney, Jack Mouse, Bob Bowman, Ed Soph, Dianne Reeves, Bobby Shew, Steve Houghton, Paquito d’Rivera, Pete Christlieb, Eddie Daniels, Hal Galper and many others. The ensemble is frequently in demand to play around the region and have been invited to play at the University of Kansas Jazz Festival, University of Tulsa Jazz Festival and the University of North Texas Jazz Festival at Addison.
